As one who teaches in the university setting and teaches classes for both graduate and undergraduate students about how to teach students to read, I found this article very interesting. It discusses the importance of the phonemic awareness and phonics when working with young children. It also discusses the five pillars of reading While it acknowledges issues resulting from a child's living circumstances outside of school and the problems associated with grading teachers' programs, it stresses the importance of an effective reading program and how being able to read can change a child's life.
