Places Visited
Rachel and some of her friends, my mother and I went to London. I found a package that included the flight and hotel at gotoday.com. We flew on Virgin Atlantic from JFK Airport in New York City. When we got to London Heathrow Airport we found the booth for Hotelink. A bus took us to our hotel and at the end of our trip took us back to Heathrow. The drivers were really helpful and the buses came when they said they would. It was a great way to get to the hotel.
We sayed at the Holiday Villa Hotel in London.
While in London we did all of our traveling either on foot or on the London Underground. This is one of the postboxes by our hotel.
We went to Madame Tussauds Saturday, the first day we were in London.
Sunday we took the Big Bus Company for a tour of London, which included a River Cruise which we took on the Thames that night. While on the tour we stopped at the Cabinet War Room, the headquarters for World War II in London and visited St Paul's Cathederal. Then we went on to The Tower of London.
We took a boat trip on the Thames.
Monday walked the Tower Bridge Experience.
We also went on the British Airways London Eye.
Later Monday we went to the Star Trek: The Adventure World Premier in Hyde Park. At night we went to the Swan, a pub near our hotel, for fish and chips.
Tuesday we visited The British Museum. While we were there two of the featured exhibits were "Albrecht Dürer and his legacy:
The graphic work of a Renaissance artist" and Antony Gormley's Field for the British Isles.
We saw the reading room at The British Museum.
After visiting the museum we ate at The Plough, a pub at 27 Museum Street. We then went shopping at Covent Garden.
On New Years Day, Wednesday, we went to Picadilly Circus and watched the parade. It was cold and pouring rain but the parade was great! The first thing in the parade was a band from Kansas. In fact it seemed that at least half of the parade was made up of groups from the United States, including a giant fire truck from Bethesday, Maryland.
Wednesday we went to the London IMAX Cinema and saw Santa vs. the Snowman in 3D.
Thursday, January 2, we went to Greenwich, walking through the tunnel under the Thames River. In Greenwich we toured the Cutty Sark and went to the National Maritime Museum, which was a marvelous museum to visit. We also toured the Royal Observatory and saw the ball drop at 1:00 PM, as it does every day. We walked through Greenwich Park.
We went to a mall near our hotel.
