Places Visited
Rachel, Brian, Bea and her parents, my mother and I ate at the Bukhara Grill. It is an Indian restaurant with a waterfall. We ate at the buffet. It is at 217 E 49th St. (between 2nd and 3rd ).
Brian and Beatrix had a beautiful wedding ceremony at Christ United Methodist Church, 678 5th St, Lakewood NJ. This was followed by a wonderful reception at the Woodlake Country Club, 25 New Hampshire Avenue, also in Lakewood. I stayed with some of the other wedding guests at the Toms River Howard Johnson Hotel.
I visited many places in the Niagara Falls area of New York, including Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown, New York. Begun by France in 1726 on the site of earlier French forts, later controlled by Britain and the United States, it supports a military presence even today.
We visited the Power Vista at the New York Power Authority's Niagara Power Project in Lewiston, New York. It has fifty hands-on-interactive displays. I also sent an electronic postcard over the Internet, using a computer to place an image of one of four Niagara project backdrops. I learned about the role hydropower has played in the Niagara Frontier's history and the future of electricity in the exhibits on solar power, fuel cells and electric vehicles. The Niagara Power Project is New York's largest electric generating facility and one of the largest in the United States. Located 4-1/2 miles downstream form Niagara Falls, the Niagara project transforms the energy of the Niagara River into electricity. There is an original terrain map with fiber optics to illustrate how Niagara River water is diverted to generate electricity. Also while there I saw a seven-foot-high mural of Niagara Falls painted by American artist Thomas Hart Benton.
We toured the Lockport Cave & Underground Boat Ride on the historic Erie Canal in Lockport, New York. It is a guided tour that took us through a 1600-foot water-power tunnel which was blasted out of solid rock in the 1800s. The tunnel provided water-power for three industries with Holly Manufacturing being renown. Birdsill Holly's inventions include the live-saving fire hydrant, central steam heat and the rotary pump. In his lifetime, Holly held many patents in the U. S., second only in number to his friend Thomas Alva Edison.
