I like the ideas in this article because they are developmentally sound and they are similar to other methods of thinking about children's activities, including the Montessori method. However, the study also says that American confidence in teachers is at a low points and many parents do not want their children to be teachers. Sometimes I hear teachers tell parents what an easy job teaching is and how little work it requires. As open house time approaches, we may want to think about how what we say sounds to the parents. Of course we love teaching but that doesn't mean we don't work at learning to be exemplary teachers. |
