December 2011
Places Visited
Rachel, Scruffy, Derek and I spent a week in Washington, D.C. On the way we stopped for gas and I got a Mint Hot Chocolate at Dunkin' Donuts. We stopped at a relatives home near Philadelphia on the way where we had a delicious holiday meal, then went to see the new Muppets movie. We stayed at the Four Points by Hilton hotel in Philadelphia.
The next day we drove to the U.S. National Arboretum. It was much bigger than I expected and was lovely, even in December. I was especially surprised to see the old sandstone columns from the capital there. The reminded me of Roman ruins. Scruffy enjoyed it also! We stayed at the Carlyle Suites Hotel which was a wonderful place. We shared an oversize room with a small kitchen, free parking, and free wifi. The hotel was very close to everything; about three blocks from DuPont Circle, an hour walking from the monuments, an hour the other way from the zoo, and only a few blocks from embassy row. We parked the car at the hotel and didn't need to drive again until we left.
We saw the National Tree in both the daylight and at night. We also saw the new Martin Luther King, Jr. monument, the Jefferson memorial, the Lincoln monument, the Newseum, the zoo at dusk so we could see the animals and the lights, the embassy's and much more. We also ate a variety of ethnic food.
On the way home we stopped in Georgetown, visiting the former ammunitions factory for World Wars I and II. It is now an artists building. We walked through Georgetown to the Mason's memorial for George Washington. It is high on a hill and we could see the capital in the distance.
It was a great trip and I loved spending time with my family. Scruffy was perfect in the car, on the walks, and in the hotel.
For Christmas, all of my children came home, and their dogs! We had a great meal, presents, and converstation. I got an X-Box. Watch out for a new me!
Later in the month, I went to Schenectady to visit Rachel and Derek. We ate at Panera Bread.
