While this article was written for college instructors when labs are closed, I think the authors' ideas will be applicable in a number of situations in the K-12 classroom. There are times when going outside of the classroom is not feasible for the entire class or certain members of the class yet it is important for students to have hands-on experience. These ideas would be especially helpful in project-based learning classrooms.

Why You Should Be a Selfish Instructor: www.facultyfocus.com/articles/philosophy-of-teaching/why-you-should-be-a-selfish-instructor/
While there are not a lot of new ideas in this article, I like how the authors provide reasons for making sure that instructors take time to care for themselves and the reasons this is important. The type of scheduling they suggest is especially important at this time when teachers' work never seems to be done. While this was written for college instructors, the ideas in the article are applicable for teachers at any grade level. Podcasting for Educators: www.techlearning.com/how-to/podcasting-for-educators
I especially like that this article says to focus on the content and then spend money, if needed, on equipment. There is also a link to a day long, free Pro audio Tech Summit on April 1, 2021. The ideas in this article could be followed whether the class is remote or in person. They will work during and after schooling returns to normal, whatever that will look like. Organization for Teens Learning Remotely: www.educationworld.com/teachers/organization-teens-learning-remotely
These are common sense, but often little thought about, ideas to help teenagers and even older students work remotely. I dare say, they are even good plans for adults who are now working from home. Keeping the Good Stuff - Strategies for Translating Virtual Instruction into Buildings: www.educationworld.com/teachers/keeping-good-stuff-strategies-translating-virtual-instruction-buildings
What I like about this article, besides its positive tone, is that it explains how teachers can incorporate what they have been doing in the virtual classroom as they go back to the traditional seated classroom. Introducing the 20121 Reading Log: bookriot.com/2021-reading-log/

"Research shows that when students - particularly those from traditionally marginalized groups - feel like they belong in the classroom, they engage more deeply in the leraning process." |
