The TED-Ed video is embedded in this article after a summation of the video. It explains why one needs to concentrate on what they are doing, not just spend mindless time on practice thinking the hours spent will have the desired effect. I have adapted this to my exercise routine and it has made a difference the effectiveness of the time I spend exercising. I think it is great for people in all age groups to be aware of.

I like to use the current popular craze to help students learn whenever I can. This article is great for helping students understand physics by using the popular fidget spinners. 100 Awfully Good Examples of Oxymoron's: https://www.thoughtco.com/awfully-good-examples-of-oxymorons-1691814

"Giving students a dedicated spot in the classroom to collect themselves helps them learn to manage their emotions - a valuable life skill." I particularly found the set up of the quiet zone useful: one student at a time, no more than five minutes in the quiet zone, not punitive, don't need a reason to go there, etc. I have seen students do things like ask for a drink or sharpen their pencil just to have a chance to walk around. This is an organized way for students to take a short break. To Engage Students and Teachers, treat Core Subjects Like Extracurriculars: https://ww2.kqed.org/mindshift/2017/05/15/to-engage-students-and-teachers-treat-core-subjects-like-extracurriculars/
This article has practical information about implementing project-based learning into the classroom while still meeting the required objectives and differentiation needed for all students to learn. I especially liked hat the authors discussed having students spend part of their time on core curriculum and then using what they learned in a project-based learning project. Closure Activities For the End of the School Year: http://www.educationworld.com/a_curr/columnists/mcdonald/mcdonald026.shtml?
While many of these activities are not new, the first part of this article talks about how to provide closure for your students at the end of the year and why this is especially important for students if you are not coming back to the same school in the fall. I had not thought about how visiting past teachers and knowing where those teachers who are not in the building have gone lessens stress for students coming back to school in the fall. Use these Activities to Wind Up Learning as the School Year Winds Down: http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/activities_for_the_last_days_school.shtml?
I am always looking for learning activities that are engaging for students during the last weeks of the school year. This article has projects that would help meet the objectives of many classes and would be ones that students would look forward to doing. Ten Questions for Prospective Teachers: http://www.educationworld.com/ten-questions-prospective-teachers?
I liked all of the discussions in this article, although I might have put them in a different order. They are certainly something for prospective teachers to think about and discuss with experienced teachers. In addition, this article might be shared with high school students and freshmen in college. Awhile and A While: https://www.thoughtco.com/awhile-and-a-while-1689310
By describing how a while and awhile are used correctly when writing, this article is informative and interesting for use in writing classes. I knew how to use them correctly but I didn't know the reason behind the difference. This article explains when to choose the spelling for each one when writing. What is an Obsolete Word?: https://www.thoughtco.com/what-is-an-obsolete-word-1691356
I like to read about new words and how they came in our language. This article talks about English words that were used in the past but aren't any longer used by most people. The definitions are included and some examples for the words. I hadn't known about most of the words so it was an interesting article to me. |
