Law
and School Reform: Six Strategies for Promoting Educational Equity
Edited by Jay P. Heubert
only one available
From the back cover of the book:
Nearly every effort to reform American public education during the last half
century has involved the law. This powerful book, essential reading for anyone
concerned with education in America, is the only comprehensive, interdisciplinary
study of six crucial, controversial reform initiatives: desegregation, school-finance
reform, education of immigrant children, special education, service integration,
and enforceable performance mandates. As the authors point out, research strongly
supports these reforms, and they remain central to school improvement in the
next century.

Inclusion and School Reform: Transforming
America's Classrooms
by Doroghy Kerzner Lipsky and Alan Gartner
only
one available
From the back cover:
From the distinguished authors of Beyond Separate Education comes
this panoramic view of inclusive education --past, present, and future. Grounded
in historical perspective and fueled by contemporary accomplishments, the insightful
discussions in this volume cover a wide range of issues, from program implementation
and classroom supports to court decisions and financing. The authors compare
successes and setbacks from schools and studies nationwide, drawing the "big
picture" of practice and research. Complementing their highly informed,
balanced analysis of special education and inclusion programs are highlights
of the results from a revealing national study of inclusive education.
Emphasizing the need for the concurrent development of inclusion and school
restructuring, Inclusion and School Reform gives Policy makers, administrators,
school board members, teachers, and parents a solid understanding of the process
of school reform, as well as a vision for the 21st century.
About the authors: Dorothy Kerzner Lipsky is Director of the National Center

Biomes Atlases
only
one set available
All are hard cover and
published in 2003
From back covers:
Biologists divide the living world into major zones called biomes, such as
deserts, oceans, tropical forests, and tundra. Looking at biomes helps us understand
the connections between our planet's climate and the plants and animals that
live in each biome. The biomes of the far north, for example, are cold and dark
for much of the year. This wintry climate favors certain types of plants, and
the plant life, in turn, has a great influence on which animals can survive there.
Biomes also have a huge impact on people. Over thousands of years, we have learned
to survive in nearly every biome by making ingenious use of the resources around
us, but in recent times our success has begun to threaten the very future of
the biomes that nurtured us. The Biomes Atleses series explores these issues,
with detailed maps focusing on key examples for each biome. Each volume reveals
the fascinating web of relationships between climate, plants, animals, and people
that makes every biome unique.
