Reading in Middle School

This is a course that I will be teaching in Summer Session I, 2006 at SUNY New Paltz.
The catalog description reads:
Concentrates on the teaching of reading in grades 4-8. Provides an in-depth study of general comprehension strategies, study skills, recreational reading, and reading strategies appropriate for content areas. Instructional techniques, including diagnostic procedures, are an important part of the course.

Activities
Sign up for a free email account and use it when you sign up for Blogger, Flikr, and Buzznet.
Find weather at certain place and time in history, perhaps to go with a book.
Have a screen and everyone adds their thoughts to it. One idea would be: “I’m on My Way”
Tell students to imagine that they will be moving to a new country tomorrow. Ask each person/group to list 10 items that they would choose to take with them to help them survive. Post the items suggested by each group. Variation: Ask student groups to list 10 items they would take with them if they were going to a new planet. Post and discuss the answers.
