http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/04/AR2006050401724.html
As many as 5.5 out of every 1,000 school-age children in the U.S. have been diagnosed with autism, according to a new government study. Researchers found boys are nearly four times more likely than girls to be identified with the condition, and Hispanics had lower rates, although that may be due to health care access issues.

Engineers hope to provide smooth slide for kids with cochlear implants: http://news-info.wustl.edu/news/tips/normal/7078.html
Manufacturers' materials can greatly affect the amount of static electricity buildup on plastic slides, a problem that can cause cochlear implants to temporarily shut down, according to Robert Morley, an associate professor of electrical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. After learning of Morley's research, a local company that makes anti-static coatings for fighter jets thinks its product could be adapted to work on slides.

Not so shocking: http://www.boston.com/news/education/k_12/articles/2006/06/23/not_so_shocking/
"AS THE only school in the nation that routinely uses skin shocks to control self-destructive and violent behavior on the part of some of its autistic, retarded, and emotionally disabled students, the controversial Judge Rotenberg Educational Center in Canton should recognize the need to maintain impeccable documentation of its practices and personnel. Carelessness of any sort plays directly into the hands of the center's critics. However, if center officials have made paperwork errors, as alleged, this should not be allowed to undermine its pivotal work."

Universal Design of Instruction: https://www.cac.washington.edu/doit/Faculty/Strategies/Universal/
"Designing any product or environment involves the consideration of many factors including aesthetics, engineering options, environmental issues, safety concerns, and cost. Often the design is created for the "average" user. In contrast universal design is "the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design." Universal design is an approach to the designed products and environments, including instruction, that takes into consideration the the variety of abilities, disabilities, racial/ethnic backgrounds, reading abilities, ages, and other characteristics of the student body."
