300,000 Children in U.S. Found to Have Autism:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/04/AR2006050401724.html
As many as 5.5 out of every 1,000 school-age children in the U.S. have been
diagnosed with autism, according to a new government study. Researchers found
boys are nearly four times more likely than girls to be identified with the
condition, and Hispanics had lower rates, although that may be due to health
care access issues.

"Russell was a registered nurse for 18 years until 1995, then pursued a
career at Suffolk University in universal design. Her specialty within the profession
is in universal design for the American With Disabilities Act. She has promoted
the construction of housing that are accessible to those who are handicapped
or learning disabled."
Engineers hope to provide smooth slide for kids with cochlear
implants: http://news-info.wustl.edu/news/tips/normal/7078.html
Manufacturers' materials can greatly affect the amount of static electricity
buildup on plastic slides, a problem that can cause cochlear implants to temporarily
shut down, according to Robert Morley, an associate professor of electrical
engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. After learning of Morley's
research, a local company that makes anti-static coatings for fighter jets thinks
its product could be adapted to work on slides.

"NEW DELHI: From developing national norms for inclusive education to strictly
enforcing 3% reservation for disabled students, creating universal design in
buildings and setting up centres for disability research, the HRD ministry has
prepared a comprehensive action plan to provide education to children and youth
with disabilities in mainstream educational settings."
Law opens graduation ceremonies to special ed students: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06124/687157-57.stm
Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell signed a bill that requires school districts to
allow students in special education to participate in graduation at the end
of 12th grade, even if their individual education plans keep them in school
until age 21. Students will receive something akin to a certificate of completion
in lieu of a diploma.

"AS THE only school in the nation that routinely uses skin shocks to control
self-destructive and violent behavior on the part of some of its autistic, retarded,
and emotionally disabled students, the controversial Judge Rotenberg Educational
Center in Canton should recognize the need to maintain impeccable documentation
of its practices and personnel. Carelessness of any sort plays directly into
the hands of the center's critics. However, if center officials have made paperwork
errors, as alleged, this should not be allowed to undermine its pivotal work."

"Designing any product or environment involves the consideration of many
factors including aesthetics, engineering options, environmental issues, safety
concerns, and cost. Often the design is created for the "average"
user. In contrast universal design is "the design of products and environments
to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need
for adaptation or specialized design." Universal design is an approach
to the designed products and environments, including instruction, that takes
into consideration the the variety of abilities, disabilities, racial/ethnic
backgrounds, reading abilities, ages, and other characteristics of the student
body."
