David Kreisberg, an instructional specialist for the Montgomery County (MD)
Public Schools, and his colleague Andrew Miller are hosting a podcast series
called "Best Practices: Staff Development on the Go" that's available
to anyone with a web browser. David writes that each episode "typically
contains three interviews with experts who discuss research, conferences,
and best practices in education related to improving teaching and learning."
The intent he says, is to offer classroom teachers "a non-traditional
delivery method to keep up with best teaching practices and conference happenings
in an informal, conversational podcast."

Second Life
3D worlds provide a great place for exploratory game based learning in combination
with traditional learning in the classroom or in online classes. Since scenic
backgrounds are provided it is just a matter of teacher imagination leading
the student to clues along the way. Game theory can be easily applied and
practiced. The advantage to working in Second Life is the building and scripting
tools to make objects and have them interact with avatars. Students can be
sent to websites, power points, streaming video and now with audio coming
in June reading circles and discussions can be conducted easily. There are
private islands for security with high school students so that they can't
wonder off to other places in the Teen Grid and teachers would only be allowed
on the island as well. There are many exciting projects happening in Second
Life at both middle/high school/higher ed levels and in health field continuing
education.
