"Roman history is usually divided into three main periods: before the rise of Rome, the Roman Republic, and the Roman Empire. The Empire is usually divided up according to who was emperor." Run by an associate history professor at Portland State University, this well-organized site is a boon to students looking for specific information such as what the Romans wore and ate, or the history of Roman pottery. There is also general Roman history, a time line, and sections on ancient Greece and Egypt.

"Roma Resurgens" is the motto of Nova Roma, an online re-creation of civic life in the late Roman Republic. It's in the spirit of the Society of Creative Anachronism (www.sca.org). "NOVA ROMA is an organization dedicated to the study and restoration of ancient Roman culture... Rome civilized the world, and we see the need for that divine mission to begin again. Founded 2,750 years after the Eternal City itself, NOVA ROMA seeks to bring back those golden years. But where our ancestors imposed their will through the sword and the Legions, we intend the same result through the spread of knowledge and through our own virtuous example..." Nova Roma is headquartered in Maine, and supported by sales of Rome-related products and by donations. Other than that, the site carries no advertising. There are some adult-level online courses available, and online experts willing to teach.

PBS: The Roman Empire in the First Century: http://www.pbs.org/empires/romans/
"Meet the Emperors of Rome, read the words of poets and philosophers, learn about life in the 1st Century AD, then try your skills in our 'Emperor of Rome' game!" You'll find the role-playing game listed under Special Features. The final outcome varies based both on your decisions and luck, so you can play it several times for different outcomes. The best way to peruse the rest of the site may be through the Site Index. For teachers, there are detailed, printable lesson plans for grades four through nine.
